Free Fitness Programs in NYC

Good Health is the Greatest Wealth.

Now repeat that a 100 times.

Every day, the newspapers and the blogs bring me new information on the risks of sitting for long hours, inadequate exercise and the dangers of a sedentary lifestyle.

I can’t help reading them and they quickly depress me because yours truly is not engaging in enough exercises/outdoor activities.

But I hope you won’t follow my sedentary path.

I strongly encourage you to lead an active life, eat well and, above all, follow a good exercise regimen like walking, jogging, visiting the gym, swimming and practicing Yoga.

The 1% have their rooftop swimming pools, 20th floor gyms, membership in fancy fitness clubs and their weekend golf.

I say to the 99% – don’t worry, my poppets.

Fortunately, there are enough FREE/Cheap avenues in New York City to enable you to stay fit and trim.

New York City Parks are waiting for you with their running tracks, baseball fields, basketball courts, tennis courts, swimming pools etc.

The NYC Parks and Recreation Department even offers free swimming classes.

NYC Parks’ Recreation Centers have fitness rooms and other facilities that you can use for a modest annual payment of $100.

Add $50 for centers with indoor pools. It’s FREE for children under 8 and just $25 a year for senior citizens.

Recreation centers may be found in all five boroughs.

By the way, the first Monday of the month is FREE for a lot of services.

Yoga Classes

The New York Public Library occasionally offers free Yoga classes by certified instructors.

All you need is a Yoga mat or beach towel.

Check the Events section on the NYPL web site frequently.
